To DBA Masters,
Just want to confirm if I can run the export (command line) even if the database is up (online)? Are there any risks/impact while doing so?

Thanks alot.

Thanks Sir for your prompt reply...
but if in case that there are simultaneous transactions (updates) going with the database while the export is running? How do the export utility extract the rows of the table? Would it get the recent updates or the previous?
Thanks again.

Reliably

>Would it get the recent updates or the previous?
Recent or previous relative to what?
It is a point in time snapshot & you can not dictate the point in time.

I guess you'd be interested in the CONSISTENT parameter:Quote:

You should specify CONSISTENT=y when you anticipate that other applications will be updating the target data after an export has started.

More information.

1/ risk: you add some load on the server, so there is a risk
2/ concurrency: it depends on the value of parameter "consistent" you give

See Database Utilities for more information.
