Guys,
Thanks in advance! Are there any major issues or major problems one may come across when using RMAN 8.1.7 catalog to backup 8.0.5 target database.
Thank you very much!

Not at all.

I am using it for both Windows and Solaris OS. As long as you backup with locally on the 8.0.5 db (using 8.0.5 RMAN) you will be OK.

Hope that helps,

Thank you. But, I am trying to use the RMAN database/catalog under 8.1.7 Oracle home. My plan is to integrate backup of several 8.0.5 databases using 8.1.7 RMAN. The reason I planned this way is 8.1.7 RMAN is much more improved than 8.0.5 RMAN. It is true that these two are compatible and will work. But I would like to know whether a setup like this could create problems often during backup and/or recovery?
Thank you very much!

IMHO, I think that is not possible. You have to use the RMAN from the installation which has the database, and you can use the repository of any upper or the same db version.

You are thinking of using TNS service name with RMAN 8.1.7 to backup 8.0.5 remote database. I doubt, that is going to work. I tried before and kept failing.

Glad to see any corrections or additions...

Hope that helps,

Take a look at "RMAN Compatibilty Matrix" in MetaLink.

Guys,
Sorry, I gave the wrong explanation. Here is my setup:
1. Target database - Oracle 8.0.5 home/database on server A.
2. RMAN executable - Oracle 8.0.5 on server A itself.
3. RMAN catalog database - Oracle 8.1.7 home/database on server B.
4. RMAN catalog schema - 8.1.7

Is this set-up stable?
Thank you very much!

That is the setup I tried to explain you should use. It is OK. I am using it for both W2K and Solaris db's and can backup/restore w/o sweat.

You should be OK.

Hope that helps,

Thank you very much for your previous input. I have one more question. Thanks in advance ! If we create a 8.0.5 catalog schema (to backup 8.0.5 target database) in an Oracle 8.1.7 catalog database and manually upgrade 8.0.5 catalog schema to 8.1.7 catalog log schema, can we benefit from additional capabilities offered by 8.1.7 catalog schema?
Thanks again!
