Hi, all:

My old PC is no longer operational. The Oracle Database I had in it was 11g. I was able to recover these files:

CONTROL.DBF
SYSAUX.DBF
SYSTEM.DBF
TEMP.DBF
UNDOTBS1.DBF
USERS.DBF

My new PC operates on Windows 7 Enterprise, 32-bit.

My questions are:

1) Can I recover the above files in a new 12c installation using ORADIM?
2) Would you recommend 12c over 11gR2? I use this database for small test work; mainly testing procedures against small tables. I don't need a memory hog. I'd prefer to recover the data if possible, but if 12c is much more efficient than 11gR2, I don't mind recreating everything. On the other hand, if 11gR2 requires less resources, I'll stick with that.

Thank you.

no!
if those are the only files, you can not recover the DB. PERIOD!

Thank you. That simplifies my choice. Smile

While no longer a recovery matter at this point, would you recommend 12c or 11gR2 based on my stated needs above?

sooner or later you'll need to use 12c, so why not start now?

Maybe to wait for the new bugs to be fixed.

if you don't use new features, then you should not hit new bugs.

I'm running Windows 32-bit. I only see Windows 64-bit version of 12c. That further simplifies my choice. Smile

Thank you.

If that's the case, your first choice might be Oracle Database Express Edition 11g Release 2.

Personally I wouldn't use the first release of any product. Stick with 11gR2 until 12cR2 comes along!

There isn't 12C for 32-bit so far.
But there are many cool new features in 12C.
RMAN enables you to transport data across platforms by using full and incremental backup sets In 12C.

I don't know, but I'd be surprised if Oracle brought out a 32-bit version of 12c. How many people are still using 32-bit Windows for hosting Oracle databases?

If you are talking about 11g R2, then I, and all my colleagues at home in their personal laptops still use 32-bit Windows.

I think the question is about production databases not play ones.

Why?

Is it even possible to purchase 32-bit hardware any more?

So of the hardware is 64-bit, why run a 32-bit OS?

Yes it is possible but I don't think anyone will put his production on these ones.

Many people are in this situation: they have laptops with 64bit CPUs (every Intel or AMD chip has been 64bit since, what, 2006 perhaps?) but they have 32bit Windows because that was what the OEMs distributed until very recently. The answer is to install Linux instead. Or if you must have Windows and don't want to pay for a 64bit Windows licence, enable the VTx and run 64bit Linux in a VirtualBox. That is what I've been doing on my old Vista laptop since I was given it six years ago.
