In RMAN, is backing up the controlfile different than backing up the data using controlfile instead of using catalog database? If it does, how are they both different? what are the steps for both?

Backup control file means your control file has been backed up. You can see a separate control file in your backup directory. Control file backup will be taken in a different file it will not be a part of the backup pieces.

Backup using control file means your control file is the repository of the backup. All the backup related information is in control file only not in catalog database.

Does not apply. All RMAN backups do update the control file. If you have a catalog database (schema) it is *in addition to* the control file.

You should always ensure that you take backups of the controlfile -- either with AUTOBACKUP ON or with the BACKUP CURRENT CONTROLFILE command.
