Hello Everyone,

Can anyone please tell me the difference between incremental backup and archive log backups? Doesn't both backs up only modified data.If i take full backup once a week and daily archive log backups does it work? or do i need to take incremental backup daily?

Please do reply.

Thanks!!!

Incremental (and full) backups are backups of data blocks from the database data files.
Archive log backups are backups of the archivelogs, which are themselves "backups" of the online redo logs.
All/both are needed to effect full recovery.

hi dear all,

Yes i agree increment backups are needed on daily basis with incremental level=1 so that you can recover your database if required in case of failure
and i also recommend that you take backup through a schedule if possible cold backup daily to avoid any imbiguity

Thanks

Maybe they are needed, maybe not, you can't say that in a general way, it is not correct for anyone in any case.
You have no absolute need of incremental backup.

NO! cold backup is so Oracle version less than 7.
Do NOT stop your database; or only if you have a very good reason to do it (for instance for an OS upgrade).

What do you mean by "imbiguity"?

Dear what i wanted to tell you was , if your scenario is 9 to 5 and for a certain period of time you have availability of database idle time,
you must go for cold backup with archive mode enabled as it would be consistant

thats what i mean

Thanks

Kamran, many DBAs (including me) disagree you on this. Shutting down a database is seriously bad for performance. It takes time for the buffer cache and the shared pool to stabilize with contents that is suitable for the workload. Furthermore, the optimizer has self-learning capabilities (think of cardinality feedback, adaptive cursor sharing) that take time.
You lose all this with every restart.
