Hi all,
could I restore a single segment (table, index, etc.) from a physical cold backup?

with cold backup, you can only restore the corresponding datafiles and other OS files only.

i dont get what u mean by 'physcal warm backup'.
w.r.to oracle, there are two backup methods.
first is to bringdown the database cleanly, copy all the files In OS level.
This is called as Cold backup ( you can restore only those files)
second is , put the tablespaces in hotbackup mode,
NO NEED TO BRING DOWN The databaes, backup the archived logs.
This is hot backup.( where you can restore a particular tablespace etc..NOTE: with rman, the tablespaces are not put in HOT backup mode).

I meant what you call "hot backup".
I have put a tablespace in backup mode before copying its datafiles into a tape or into another backup device.
