Rman connect target failed [message #127740]

I using a 10g rman catalog and executable connect to some 8i and 9i database but fail. I suppose rman 10g version should support version 8i and 9i database. so what is the solution? does anybody help me.

RMAN> connect target sys@btest1

target database Password:
