hi
I'm wondering if it's possible to recover (apply redo logs) a database without restoring it.

Theoretically it is possible. Keep in mind that it will not do anything unless you first restore to a prior point in time.

Best regards.

Can I ask your thoughts behind why you would want to recover without restoring?

well,
i want to do a PITR but since i haven't lost any datafiles,
i was wondering if was possible to consider my datafile
(in my controfile for instance) as those i've backed up.
then i could use my archived redo logs to recover until a time a want

If I'm understanding you correctly then I'm afraid not (although depends on the version)

If your not using 10g then the theory behind a Point in time recovery is that you take your database back in time and roll forward to when you want. You can't roll back.

Because of this you MUST restore every datafile (but not controlfiles or redolog files) from a backup which was made before you want your recovery to stop. You then perform your recover until time command and open your database with a resetlogs.

Just as an additional point - make sure you backup your current controlfiles and redolog files before you start any recovery, these will give you the opportunity to have another go if your first attempt was not successful.
